Kristin Stiles Green, N.D.:
One of the most important roles we play here is helping to educate patients about the effectiveness of conventional oncology care. We have a lot of patients, particularly women with breast cancer who are incredibly fearful of undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery and have heard or read a lot about potentially alternative therapies that can cure their cancer, heal their tumors, and certainly it has been endorsed by celebrities even in the media that you don’t need to undergo conventional cancer care, you can just do these natural options and we’re here to help these patients understand that most of those therapies are not well proven, not scientifically researched in the same way that conventional oncology care is.
We want them to understand that natural products are wonderful, they are great, but none of what we have in our arsenal is as powerful or as strong as conventional chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. So we really want to support the patients in understanding that we can do so much to support their immune function, prevent side effects, manage side effects, get them through the treatment safely and effectively however, it’s not in their best interest to avoid those therapies. Really, the research stands strongly behind conventional cancer care as your first route of therapy and using all these wonderful integrative complementary therapies as an adjunct to that care.
