Reverend Percy McCray shares how he empowers female cancer patients and connects them to God.

Reverend Percy McCray:
Well, often I am confronted with the question in general, “Am I being punished by God?” and certainly from a female perspective there are some other dynamics I think that are unique to that milieu of people, particularly in terms of femininity, particularly for dealing with body issues, or dealing with issues of a sense of internal sexuality, in terms of their spouses etc., etc. so they create some unique challenges and some of things that we help our female patients work through is the idea, number one, that they are not just limited to their physical sense of who they are, and this is another dynamic of the power of spirituality because spirituality and religion helps people to get in contact with the inner sense of who they are that is not limited to physical interpretation of others in terms of acceptance and being viewed in a certain beauty or a certain light.

It also helps women to work through, if there are issues particularly from scaring or removal of certain body parts, to also begin a focus on developing a greater sense of well-being, internal well-being. In terms of relationships with their spouses, if we have the opportunity to speak with their spouses it is helping them to understand and seek their inner beauty that also lives within that physical body that is not limited to whatever may have taken place to it because of sickness, disease or any such thing.

So, there are some nuisances that we utilize in helping women to understand that their inner beauty is fantastic and their spiritual sense of beauty really helps to define their outer beauty and that gives them a great sense of empowerment.

I remember a particular patient who had a radical mastectomy and she came back and she showed me her scar and what she had done with her scar is that she had a big butterfly tattooed over her scar and she said, “I didn’t allow myself to be defined by what I did or didn’t have. I did something about that because that’s who I am. I am a beautiful butterfly that is waiting to fly and soar,” and so she used that as a symbolism in her external being to represent her internal sense of who she was from God. So those are some things that can be done to utilize and help woman work through some of those challenges and dynamics.
