Can A Woman Have Reconstructive And Breast Cancer Surgery On The ...
13 of 13
Dr. Chung:
There are multiple, or there are many types of breast reconstruction that a woman can have, and I think not every type is for everyone. So, when a woman is deciding on breast reconstruction, it’s very important that she sees a plastic surgeon who is well-trained in all the different options so that they know that there are different options out there for them, and that some type of reconstructions may be ideal for one type of woman, and then another type might be ideal for someone else.
The easiest, most, probably least debilitating, shall we say, types of reconstructive surgery is the implant surgery. It involves probably the shortest operation and sort of takes the least toll on the body, but there are other types of reconstruction that involve tissue transfer, such as moving tissue from the abdomen up to the breast or from the back, that are a little bit more involved and certainly are not the greatest options for women, for example, who smoke or who maybe don’t have enough fat on their body to even consider moving it from one area to the other.
So, when a woman is considering reconstruction, it’s really important for her to know all the options out there and to know what type might suit their lifestyle and also suit their needs in terms of what they would want cosmetically.
