Treating Menstrual Cramps Naturally Part 1

May 20, 2009 - 11:19am 463 reads 0 comments

Today we will look at how I approach treating menstrual cramps that result from female hormonal imbalances.

Whenever one of my patients is in pain, I always create a short-term approach and a long-term approach to address their problem. In the short-term approach I want to help them alleviate their pain as quickly as possible and in the long-term approach, I want to resolve the hormonal problem permanently if possible.

Pain due to cramps is often caused because of cramping in the muscles of the uterus as it is shedding the inner lining called endometrium. The endometrium sheds each month that there is no fertilized egg and this is what produces a period.

The muscles in the uterus are used to help release the lining. I recommend magnesium to reduce muscle contraction and pain. As a short-term plan, I suggesting supplements and foods that are high in magnesium. I have them start a couple of weeks before their period. Examples of foods that are high in magnesium are Swiss chard, spinach, summer squash, pumpkin sees, broccoli and other green, leafy vegetables. I will also recommend magnesium supplementation in divided doses during the day.

A note about supplementation.
