Hello, I am Dr. Michael Orris. I am a board-certified general surgeon. I am a Fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. I also head up the Bariatric Surgical Program at the Banner Healthcare System.

Yes, the Banner System hosts many free seminars, one of them being for bariatric surgery. These seminars are mainly geared for the patient or potential patient that is overweight; their weight is basically impacting their quality of life. They have been trying to lose their weight through diet, exercise, and behavior modification without success or minimal success, and they need something else to alter their weight loss and these patients are interested in bariatric surgery and they come, they are not specifically for their medical history to be answered or past surgical history to be answered, but just to get an idea, “Is bariatric surgery for me?” And that’s what these seminars are for.

Well we host the seminars either once a week or once every other week, depending on demand, and in the seminars it’s a typical PowerPoint presentation where we talk about the dangers of obesity, the comorbid conditions or the associated illnesses that are associated with being severely overweight. Then your weight loss options, and in particular, surgical weight loss options because that’s what we are here to discuss.

Then we discuss the pros and cons of each of the procedures that we offer and specialize in, and then we talk about our programs specifically at the Banner Center, and then we open up to any questions or a question and answer period for the patients to participate in.

We typically see patients from the Phoenix valley, from the Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert, central Phoenix, Scottsdale, out in the Glendale area and west of Glendale, but not only are we just confined to the Phoenix metropolitan area, but we have many patients coming from New Mexico and out of state. So we really have to tailor our program for the patient in terms of where they live, how far they have to travel, and how many times they can get to us.

So therefore, not only do we have to allow the patient easy access in and out of our office, but we also have a lot of online support programs as well to suit each individual patient’s needs.

Well at the Banner Bariatric Center, our focus is on success and not just surgery. So we offer this multidisciplinary approach in our surgical weight loss. So surgery is only one aspect of the program.
