LAP-BAND® And Gastric Bypass Surgeries: How Do They Differ? - Dr. Orris

Dr. Michael Orris recalls the major differences between the LAP-BAND® And gastric bypass procedures. Dr. Orris is a skilled bariatric surgeon at Banner Estrella Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dr. Orris:
LAP-BAND® and a gastric bypass – they are both weight loss surgeries but that’s where the similarity begins and ends. The LAP-BAND® is purely restrictive procedure meaning that it restricts your caloric intake. We restrict it to approximately 1200 calories a day and the way that happens is that the band, by being placed around the upper portion of the stomach, the patient feels full faster and longer with less calories.

On the gastric bypass it has both restrictive qualities, as well as malabsorptive qualities, because we are transecting the upper portion of the stomach, generating a gastric pouch, and re-routing the intestine bypassing what’s called the biliary pancreatic limb. So in the gastric bypass, not only are you taking in less calories, but you are also absorbing less calories. So in our gastric bypass patients, those patients are losing weight a bit faster than the LAP-BAND® patients. However, when you extrapolate the data beyond three years, the weight loss is kind of similar.

In terms of anatomy, on the LAP-BAND® we are kind of just altering your anatomy; on the gastric bypass we really change your anatomy. So a LAP-BAND® is adjustable; the gastric bypass is really not adjustable. We really, once we change your anatomy that’s it, you have a gastric bypass and you will always be a gastric bypass patient. Also, the LAP-BAND® is reversible meaning that you could take the LAP-BAND® out and it’s like you never had a surgery.
