When Wai Yee was diagnosed with breast cancer, she was scheduled for a lumpectomy. It was decided a mastectomy would be better, and after the process, Wai Yee underwent a breast reconstruction.
Facing breast cancer, Wai Yee was scheduled to undergo a lumpectomy on one of her breasts. However, once they began the process, it was determined that a mastectomy on that breast was called for instead. As part of her options, Wai Yee opted to have breast reconstruction.
Once done with her both that surgery and her chemotherapy, however, Wai Yee did extensive research and determined, as a prophylaxis, to have a mastectomy on the remaining breast. She found a board certified plastic surgeon who would give her the most natural replacement for what she lost.
Today, there are many choices to make in breast reconstruction, including implants (filled with either saline or silicone gel), tissue transplanted from your own back, belly, or buttock, a reconstructed breast with a smooth surface, or a reconstructed nipple (tattooed or made from your own transplanted tissue). Wai Yee is pleased with the results of her surgery, and feels as if her breasts are even better than before!
