I had unprotected sex 7 days before I was due for my period, I'm now 7 days late. I'm usually quite regular. I had a baby 8mths ago. Yesterday there was some thick lotion type mucus and today was egg white....I took two tests one two days ago and one two days before that....both negative. My life is normally stressful but has never interrupted my cycle.

Anonymous here.
Since having my baby they have been regular starting at the start of the month. Two weeks ago was the first time in 5 months that I was sexually active. Today my mucus is now just a milky colour and texture. I have had the cramping but no bleeding, which is why I'm concerned. I will try not to stress about it and hopes that they come soon. Chances are I won't be sexually active anytime soon.

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER and thank you for reaching out to us with your concern of a late period.

Since giving birth, when did your periods return? How long is your menstrual cycle? And your periods have been on time since resuming after childbirth?

Normally, ovulation occurs about 14 days following the last day of your last period. You are most likely to conceive with unprotected intercourse five days before ovulation and on the day of ovulation.

Monitoring your vaginal discharge or cervical mucus is a way to detect impending ovulation.

Immediately prior to ovulation, most women usually detect increased vaginal secretions that are similar to the consistency of raw egg white. Generally, your body produces the greatest amount of this type of vaginal discharge is on the day of ovulation.

Immediately following the day of ovulation, your vaginal discharge gradually becomes thicker in consistency, and less is secreted.

Anonymous, you presented with the opposite. I am wondering if your menstrual cycle is a bit off and you are just ovulating now. This might explain the late start and negative pregnancy test results.

I suggest you relax and wait. If you are sexually active, use protection. If you still do not start your period in the next two weeks, contact your gynecologist for further recommendations.

Regards,
Maryann
