Brown discharge

My period was due Feb 22 but didn't come until March 8 and it was lighter then usual, I had chlamydia so I imagine that was the cause. I was treated with azithromycin and doxycycline and then the health clinic said that was the wrong treatment and gave me an injection, flagyl and more doxycycline but I only took them for a week instead of two. Anyways I got retested and the test was negative. 3 days ago I started spotting pinkish blood and for the past two days I have been having brown spotting! The only other symptom I have is a headache which I have had for the past week. Can someone please tell me what could be causing this? I can't get it in to see my doc until April 11.

Hi Anon,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community.

In the process of you working with your doctor to regain your vaginal health, your body has endured a lot.

The brown discharge you're experiencing could be a result of vaginal hormonal imbalance associated with the infection.  It also could be Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding which causes brown spotting when an egg is not released from a woman's ovaries and her hormone level remains high.

As for the headaches, it could be a side effect from the medications you were taking.  Dizziness and headaches are the 1 and 2 side effect listed for Flagyl.

Research the side effects of all the medications you've taken recently and if the symptoms persist, seek immediate medical attention.

Here is a website to further your research:

I hope this helps.

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER and thank you for reaching out to us with your concern.

Call the health clinic where you were treated for chlamydia.

In severe cases where the infection spreads to the endometrium, which is the inner lining of the uterus, the endometrial cavity is completely destroyed. In such cases, menstrual flow is decreased and flow starts out as brown spotting.

I hope this helps.
