I had 3 cysts removed from my abdomen. The results came back that it was cellular dermatofibroma, but the proliferation shows expression of CD34 at the edge of the spindle cells at the interface with adipose tissue. Vascular structures also show expression of CD34. What does this mean?

Guide

Hello Gemini0621,

Welcome to the EmpowHER community. Thank you for reaching out to us to help interpret what sounds like the pathology report.

Have you had a follow up appointment with the surgeon who removed these cysts? If not, you should schedule one today. Your surgeon can review the findings and best explain how they relate to you.

I will provide you with general information.

Dermatofibroma is a common benign tumor. Compared with usual dermatofibroma, cellular dermatofibroma has an increased chance of recurrence following excision and metastasis is reported.

Regarding the term, CD34, it is a cluster of differentiation, which is a protocol used for the identification and investigation of cell surface molecules.

Regards,
Maryann
