Depression

I no longer get out of bed, or have interest in anything. I have noticed that my focus is off, I have become forgetful, specifically of things I've known all my life. I lack drive, motivation, joy of life. My weekends involve me staying in bed all weekend. I quit my job. I stayed in bed four days straight this time. Today I haven't wanted to get out of bed. Am I depressed or suffering from going through menopause? I had a hysterectomy at the age of 32, but still have one ovary left

Hi again and thank you for writing.

I'm not an expert, but I am happy to read that you did get yourself to the local clinic. Taking Vitamin D does help, especially if you are not out much and have limited sun exposure. I hope you continue to take it and you see some more improvement.

I am sorry you lost your car, I know this makes life even more difficult, especially if you are trying to find work. It's a vicious cycle. We need work to pay bills, such as a car payment...and we need a car to get to work. I hope you continue to strive to find employment, maybe something near where you live. It's very hard on many people now with the economy so slow and jobs so scarce. Don't give up. Make an effort each day. Take a walk and drop one resume off every day to another business. Even if it is something you haven't done before, it is a stepping stone. And it will make you feel better.

It's good to hear you do have a safe place to stay. Life will get better. Many of us are in dire situations and going through many changes too. Sometimes, we don't know our own strength! But it is there.

Take care!! Keep us posted!!

Hello all. I am not in this country against my choice, I emigrated here years ago due to marriage. I am no longer married (it was a domestic violent situation) and have been divorced for years. I do not have a regular doctor because I cannot afford one. The domestic situation I referred to in my original post no longer exists as I have moved out.

I still feel depressed. I went to the local medical clinic and was told to take Vitamin D. I have been for two weeks now, it seems to be helping a little. Since my post, I have been unable to find steady employment, and have lost my car.

At least I have a place to stay and I'm extremely thankful for that.

I hope you come back and write an update soon. I just joined and am reading comments. I could not read your comments and not reply. Please know that you are not alone. Please know that others do care.

Women are amazing at showing compassion to other women and to also be a strong support, even when we feel weak ourselves, we find enough strength to hold out a hand to other women who are hurting.

Whatever your situation, you will never be judged here, only empowered to help yourself, to gain bits of strength to get you through each day and maybe to be an example and a source of light to other women.

You must have an inner strength and desire to be helped because you reached out. Sometimes we don't realize our own strengths until we are so low, we have no other choice than to get up and stand on our own two feet!! I know you can do it!!

Hope to hear from you soon!!

Hi coffygirl,
Thank you for your post and for finding EmpowHER. Regardless if it is depression or menopause, there are things you can do to make your situation better. It sounds like you do want to be better. Start with your doctor. Do you have one you trust? They can refer you to a therapist, or counselor to work with and figure out what could be going on. There is medication you can take to help improve your outlook until you can learn to cope on your own. If it is menopause, there are several different ways to treat symptoms.
Do you have family? What did you used to like to do? What do you do in bed? Do you read, watch TV, or sleep?
Please come back and give us more information, and let us know if you need help locating resources.
You also may want to join the Depression Group at EmpowHER: Depression Group
Good luck and let us know how you're doing.

My family lives in another country. I used to like to read, sew, and since I moved here I quite enjoyed the outdoors and taking photos. When I stay in bed, all I do is watch TV and sleep, sometimes I read a little. I just lay there and don't want to get out. I live in a difficult domestic situation as well...

Hi coffygirl,
Thanks for coming back and talking with us.
When you say difficult, what do you mean by that? Are you in this country against your choice? If you could go back to your home country, would you? Please know, you do have choices. Please let us know how we can help. Do you need resources for changing your situation? Please share whatever information you are comfortable sharing.
Do you have a doctor? Would you go see them and explain your situation and how you are feeling. I'm positive they also would be a great resource for helping you get through this.
We also are a great network of women who want to see you happy, healthy and moving forward in your life. We are here to inspire and support you. You may feel stuck now, but you can get through this.
