Q:

Did the plan b one step work?

I took plan b one step about a month ago and got my period one week later when I had just had it two weeks prior. It's been three weeks since I had my period now and I'm spotting randomly. I spotted two days ago but not yesterday and I spotted again today but the spotting is very light like only once a day. Does this mean anything? Is it just from the plan b pill? Is there a chance I might be pregnant even though I had my period? Should I take a pregnancy test?

Hello Anonymous,

Plan B One Step did work for you. It is evident because you had a period one week after taking it. Some women experience changes in their menstrual cycle as a side effect of taking the pill.

The high dose of the synthetic hormone contained in the emergency contraceptive upset your normal hormonal balance. The menstrual cycle is regulated by hormones. You took the pill just two weeks after having a period and really upset your normal hormonal balance.

There is no need to take a pregnancy test. You are not pregnant. You need to allow your body to return to normal.
