Hey there anon, I like your approach. We have e-mailed two of the nation's top oncologists to find answers for you. A note though -- sometimes they may take a day or two to get back and it looks like you may need an answer sooner than that. Another tip might be to check out this database and find an oncologist in your state.

I bet you could probably call one of their offices and they would be more than happy to be interviewed by you. Will you let us know what he or she says?

Hi Anonymous,

Your teacher is trying to teach to you to think analytically, which will help you later in high school and in college. Before I just give you an answer, what do you think?

Keep in mind, there is not just one correct answer.

Okay,

Well, I am not personally a doctor, though I am attending nursing school, but I will see what I can do to find someone who can respond to you.

In the meantime, my first thought was similar to yours. Oncologists are capable of diagnosing cancer, to extend the lives of patients therefore giving them more time to learn about the world around them.

On another thought, researchers focusing on oncology, the study of cancer, are learning how our environments affect our bodies, sometimes producing harmful chemicals and toxins that can cause cancer. For example, it was recently thought that PBA plastic water bottles caused cancer. While this theory has temporarily been refuted, research is ongoing.

Additionally, in the past, no one knew smoking cigarettes were harmful, but now it is well known that cigarettes can cause lung cancer among other conditions like emphysema.

Also, you may want to watch some videos by Dr. Marchese. I think they will be helpful. https://www.empowher.com/users/dr-marianne-marchese

Hope this helps and I will see what we can do about finding a certified expert to answer your question.
