It is almost 5 monthssince having my left ovary removed due to a dermoid cyst. With all the fertility monitoring I've been doing for years, I feel like the surgery was a really bad idea. I'm not having normal cycles . My moods are highly reactive and I'm extremely emotional and irritable constantly. As well as getting hot flashes now and night sweats and extreme insomnia. I am really afraid now that with my medical history of lupus this surgery may have kicked me into perimenopause. Has anyone else ever had a unilateral salpingo oophorectomy and begun the early stages of menopause as a result of losing one ovary? Please help, I'm losing my mind...

Welcome to EmpowHER and thank you for reaching out to our community for support with your concern about early onset perimenopause because of a unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy.
For the benefit of all our readers, a salpingo-oophorectomy is the removal of the fallopian tube (salpingectomy) and ovary (oophorectomy).
Premenopausal women who undergo a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy are placed into surgical menopause.
Anonymous, since you had a unilateral procedure, you still have one ovary and one fallopian tube. This should not lead to problems with your menstrual cycle, affect your sex drive, initiate perimenopause or prevent you from becoming pregnant.
Please consult your gynecologist about your symptoms and if your history of lupus has any influence.

I do believe that my lupus has a part to play in this, unfortunately I missed a recent appointment with my GYN Surgeon and am waiting to reschedule.
My cycles are still very irregular and I'm having so many emotional symptoms, night sweats, insomnia and hot flashes and am trying to get in as soon as possible to see if simple hormone replacement might be the balance I need.. I feel like one of the two hormones aren't at the right levels... But without blood work I cannot kow this for sure.
I have backed off the herbal hormone balancers I've been taking for awhile to see if things change, but so far I see no difference.
Hopefully things get better soon.

I had a unilateral oopherectomy, but I did not have a fallopian tube one the right side and I had a appendectomy. I am experiencing similar symptoms plus weight gain. I believe having one ovary and fallopian tube removed is going to effect your hormone levels.
