Q:

I am undergoing my second period of the month and it is more prolonged than usual. Could something be wrong?

I began a second period 8 days after my previous one, and it has now been bleeding for 8 days. I am taking birth control, and the last time I had intercourse was November 27th. I am 18. I started my period on December 10th and it lasted until December 13th, but then began again on December 21st. This is the first time this has happened. What does this mean?

Guide

Your gynecologist is the best person to determine the reason you have recently had 2 periods in one month.

However, I can give you some general causes. The first cause is a hormonal imbalance. Hypothyroidism (under active thyroid gland) is known to cause periods to come more frequently.

Abnormal thickening of the uterine lining can cause a period to come twice in one month. Birth control pills containing  only estrogen and not progesterone is another cause. Polyps or fibroids may cause irregular periods.

I hope this information has been helpful.
