Hello and welcome to EmpowHer,
The short answer is: yes. However, the improvement of memory will depend on the extent of the damage from the alcohol. The more the damage, the longer the metal recovery. For example, alcoholics stop making as many connections in the brain during the time they are alcoholics. This is why the mental age of an alcoholic remains around the same age as when they started the addiction. These kinds of connections in the brain that were never developed, need deliberate rehabilitation once the addiction ends. Not drinking any more will prevent further damage, but will start allow the brain to rebuild itself. But it takes repeated actions and/or thoughts to build connections in the brain.
But of course that is an extreme scenario. If a person only drinks maybe 4 times a month, for example, improvement of memory is more subtle if that person stops drinking completely and does not need extreme rehabilitation as an alcoholic would.
