Q:

If you cramp a week before your period, spot then bleed heavy for two days and spot after are you pregnant?

I started cramping a week before my period was due. I was spotting for two days then I began to have heavy bleeding for two days. After the two days of heavy bleeding I began to spot for two days and then nothing. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. My mom and sister thinks it may be to early to detect pregnancy but i think I'm not..although the period was not as heavy as I'm used to and the fact that I don't usually get cramps during my period. Should I take another test? Is something wrong with me?

Hi, I'm new here. The past couple of days have been very strange for my cycle. Period expected on the 22-23 September. My partner and I are TTC (trying to conceive), we had unprotected sex 16and 17 September.
On the 18th I start to have slight cramps and brownish discharge, 19th had the same thing happen, cramps with brownish discharge with a little bit of blood, I thought this may have been and implantation bleed.
But then today (20th), cramps and a slightly heavier red discharge, which I'm assuming might be my period. But I'm stil 2 days early, I've never had anything like this happen before and then it happens right when we are TTC, could I be pregnant or could this be something more serious???????

HI, I plan on contacting my gyn soon but I am 29 with 3 children ages 1, soon 3 & 4. I had tubal ligation during my csection with my last and had normal bleeding after birth and 1 period. After that breastfeeding kept "aunt flo" at bay for 10 months. Then I resumed normal monthly periods for 3 months. I have PCOS and normally have heavy periods and am used to them skipping months from time to time but I spotted brown last month 2 weeks before my period for 3 days. Now this month I began spotting brown for 1 day before my period was due then had a light period for 6 days and 2 days of spotting brown again. So it is 9 days so far and I've never experienced this. Also my blood pressure is suddenly going up instead of decreasing as I am losing weight. I am 5'3 and weighed 188 and several machines said I was prehypertension and now I've lost 8lbs and 2 different machines are saying Hypertension Stage 1. I'm so lost and confused by my health right now. I'm still making efforts to lose weight but worried about my health.

Hello Anonymous,

Thank you for reaching out to us with your concerns about your period and hypertension.

How high is your blood pressure? Are you using a home monitory unit?

A blood pressure of less than 140/90 is recommended for persons under the age of 30 and up to the age of 59. I strongly recommend you have your BP checked by your primary care physician.

Brown vaginal discharge or brown spotting indicates old blood. It is not uncommon for a woman to have light brown spotting before the start of her menstrual period. This is old blood left behind in the uterus from the previous period. But, in your case, you should contact your gynecologist and report what has been going on.

Congratulations on working on losing weight. Speak with your physicians about your concerns. This will give you peace of mind and keep you on the rack to good health.

Regards,
Maryann

Hello Anonymous,

Thank you for your question.

How long do your periods normally last? Is the flow start out light and get heavier as the days progress?

How old are you? I am asking because menstrual irregularities are an early sign of perimenopause. As estrogen levels fluctuate, a woman will notice changes such as a missed period, prolonged period or lighter menstrual flow.

If you are too young to be ready for perimenopause and this is the first time your period has been like this, consider contacting your gynecologist for further advice.

Regards,
Maryann

Hi,
I was wondering if you could help me out.
On 9/5 only 10 days after just ending my period I began spotting for the first time ever. It lasted for a few hours and then stopped. Later that evening I began to bleed lightly and have bad abdominal cramps which all stopped after 3 hrs. The next day 9/6 I had severe cramps but no spotting or bleeding until the afternoon when I had a moderate amount of bleeding in sue. This too only last till the early evening and then stopped. When I went to bed that night I was having increased severe abdominal cramping and a headache and woke up in the middle of the night to heavy bleeding. The bleeding hasn't stopped and it's almost as if I have began my period. I'm concerned with this and wondering if it is indeed my period hitting because I have never had a normal menstrual cycle ever and I have never spotted before. My periods if they come early are two days at the most. I am notorious for getting them late though and that will range from 3 days to two weeks late. It is also not uncommon for me to go a month to two between cycles as well. The last time I had an early period was in 2007 when I was 21 days past my last period when I began and that lasted for 3 months. I know that I'm not pregnant because the husband and I had sex over a three weeks ago and I have taken several tests that have came back negative. I'm just a little concerned and wondering if this is indeed my period starting at an overwhelmingly early time?

Hello Anonymous,

Thank you for your question.

I understand that you have a history of irregular periods. But, I am very concerned about the strong abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding that progressed from spotting to heavy bleeding. Now the bleeding persists and that this all began 10 days after your last period.

I think you should call your gynecologist as soon as you read this.

Regards,
Maryann
