I started cramping a week before my period was due. I was spotting for two days then I began to have heavy bleeding for two days. After the two days of heavy bleeding I began to spot for two days and then nothing. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. My mom and sister thinks it may be to early to detect pregnancy but i think I'm not..although the period was not as heavy as I'm used to and the fact that I don't usually get cramps during my period. Should I take another test? Is something wrong with me?

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to the EmpowHER community. Considering your history, I suggest you schedule an appointment with your gynecologist and have a blood pregnancy test done. A blood test is more accurate than a urine test, and would eliminate your confusion and concern.

Hi Maryann... I went off the pill the beginning of this past August. We have been trying to conceive since that time. I had a regular period ever since I could remember, on and off the pill. During the month of December I had a normal period which then led me to January for yet another normal period. My cycle is very regular and last 28 days almost to a T, however, this month was not so normal. On day 20 of my cycle, which was Jan. 8th I began to bleed, not very heavy and only lasted about 2 days. I have been reading a lot about implantation bleeding and I am wondering if this is the case. My normal period should of come this past Sat/Sun, which would of been the 21/22. Currently I did not get my period as of yet. I am wondering if this would be considered an early period? Or am I now officially late. The last pregnancy test I took was Friday the 14, which resulted in negative. Could this have been too early to detect?

Hello Anonymous,

I hope to help you feel less confused and anxious.

Implantation bleeding is scanty and usually pink or brownish in color. It usually happens around 6 to 12 days after ovulation and fertilization.

With a 28 day cycle, you should have ovulated around January 7. If you had sexual intercourse 2 or 3 days before, there is a chance of conception. The most fertile time for you is day 12 to day 16.

Retest the beginning of next week. A urine pregnancy test can detect hCG levels 12 to 14 days following conception. Test with the first urine of the morning.

Anonymous, keep in touch. I hope you get a positive result:)

Maryann

I have normal periods, but January it was real heavy and
Lasted for like two weeks, had intecourse with my mate a day after I was off.
And now February I haven't started spotting but just for a day. Took a test
And it was negative but could have tested to early. Could I be pregnant?

Hello Anonymous,

Let's start with your period in January. Heavy bleeding that lasts two weeks is something to be concerned about.

If the only time you had unprotected intercourse was the day after your period ended, then there is no chance that you are pregnant. But, if there have been more occasions later in the month, then pregnancy is possibly the reason you have not had a period this month.

For accurate results, you should take a home pregnancy test once your period is late by at least one week. Checked the expiration date. Test with the first urine of the morning.

Anonymous, if you do not get a period this month, schedule an appointment for an exam with your gynecologist or primary care physician.

Maryann

Thankyou for your reply. I am 20 years old and the heavy bleeding has now stopped after lasting for around 2 to 3 days so unsure if it was an early period.

Hello Anonymous,

Since you are only 20 years old, perimenopause can be ruled out.

Have you ever had a pelvic exam and/or a pelvic ultrasound?

Uterine fibroids, which are noncancerous growth of the uterus, can cause heavy menstrual bleeding as well as prolonged menstrual periods. If your menstrual cycles continue to be irregular, or you start experiencing pelvic pressure or pain, think about scheduling an appointment with a gynecologist.

I have always pritty much had my period at the same time as each month apart from last month when i came on 3 or 4 days earlier and it was very light and was only really noticiable when i wiped. This lasted for 2 days then went so i just classed that as my period. But this month i am due to come on in another 12 days but i am now heavily bleeding. Is this just my next period 12 days early?

Hello Anonymous,

The menstrual cycle is regulated by hormones. So, any time there is an irregularity, the cause is hormonal.

The first thought that comes to mind is could you be starting perimenopause.

Anonymous, how old are you? Some women begin to experience menstrual cycle changes in their 40s, but some as early as their mid-30s.

Estrogen levels rise and fall unevenly during perimenopause.

Monitor your menstrual cycles. If you continue to have heavy bleeding and the interval between periods increases, like every two weeks, please consult your gynecologist. There is the concern of anemia secondary to increased blood loss from vaginal bleeding.

Regards,
Maryann
