Hi Lily,
That is great that you doubled-up on your pill Monday, since you missed one on Sunday. It is equally important to use a back-up method of birth control for the next 7 days after you miss pills.
You said you then missed another pill, sometime between Monday 20th and today (29th), but did not make-up this pill?
Missing one pill, then taking it as soon as you remember, does not significantly increase your chances for pregnancy; your pill directions most likely do not even say you need back-up method of birth control (although, it does not hurt!).
The second pill you missed...if there was a week in between missing Sunday 19th' pill and the second pill, you would not need emergency contraception IF you took that missed pill as soon as you remembered. If you did not make up the second missed pill, or if you missed that pill sometime between the 19th and 25th (7 days after you missed the first one), it would be a good idea to take emergency contraception.
Does that make sense? Another way to word it:
- If the second pill you missed was between the 25th and 28th, AND you made-it-up as soon as you remembered, you would not need emergency contraception....but please make sure your pill instructions say that "missing one pill, and taking it as soon as you remember, does not require back-up method of birth control".
Either way, EC has not long-term negative effects (only short-term spotting or breakthrough bleeding for a cycle or two), and those side effects are well-worth the possible benefit of added protection against pregnancy. If you are able to use EC, I would recommend using it "just in case". Your situation does not sound like you are at a very high risk for pregnancy, but anytime you miss a pill...especially two pills in one week...you risk of pregnancy does increase.
Let me know if any of this is confusing! I can word it better if I know the date that you missed the second pill. Hope this helps..if not, let me know and I can clarify!

What does it mean if I have been bleeding for more than 7 days? I just had my period the week of 6/6/10 and missed some pills so I threw the rest of that pack out and then started a new pack only to get 3 days behind in the first week and so I threw those out on Friday and then started a new pack this Sunday....

When you miss pills, your body senses the hormone change and you get a period. Because you keep starting and stopping your body keeps starting a period. This up and down with your hormones can be hard on you. Have you considered the Depo shot or something so you don't have to remember to take the pills?

Great anonymous! Seeing your physician is the best way to find out for sure. Can you please update us on what he/she says on Monday? You will help others that find themselves in the same situation.
Good luck! Cannot wait for an update.

Hi Anonymous,
I think you are safe to say that your not pregnant if you are having periods. While you are taking the pill, the effect is to control your periods so that you don't have them until you start taking the sugar pills which tells your body, ok, now it is time to release the eggs. When your body is not being told not to have a period (by taking the pills), it says..ok, time to release the eggs so what you are experiencing is very common.
Since you are sexually active, you should use a backup method of birth control until you are back on track. Sunday start back on the pill after your period and still use a backup method for at least 7 days after you begin the pill again.
If you have any concerns, get a pregnancy test to settle your nerves about the possibility. There is always a chance of pregnancy even while taking the pill since nothing has a 100% guarentee so always use condoms not only for a backup but also for protection against sexually transmitted diseases.
Did this help answer your question?

Okay, here's a question for you smarties! I haven't been watching my birth control pills as closely because we're considering trying next month for a baby. I had screwed up my previously birth control pills and we had intercourse a few times before he left to go out of state for work. When he left and since I was so many days beind, I completely stopped taking them to prepare to take a new set of bc. I then started on my first week of my pills and have already gotten 2 days behind. The second day I was behind (but still taking the pills to catch up to the correct date as I have been told to do so before, I started lightly bleeding and noticed some bown coloring as well. I am strongly thinking it's implantation bleeding, but I have been bleeding for my third day now and most people say it lasts only a day or two. HOWEVER, It's deffinitely not a normal period as it's still way lighter than normal and brownish coloring.
I stopped taking my birth control and am going to visit the doctor tomorrow to discuss this issue, bu would you say I have a good chance of being preggo right now? :) (not the best way to go about it, but things do happen when you least expect them) I am normally very accurate on my pills except for this last month.
