Hi
I have a random sharp stabbing pain at the front of my left shin. I have recently suffered a slipped disc and sciatica... I do not run or, dare I say exercise, due to my lower back problem at the moment and it is strange that this has only happened since the sciatica...I know and have had shin splints before and this is different... any other ideas..I am a 40 yr old female... thanks!

Hi I have the same issue. In the middle of my left shin bone a stabbing pain that last from 5 to 10 comes and goes. It's been like that since 3 weeks ago. So im kind of paranoid bcz whenever I google it "bone cancer" appears and im really scared to go to the doctor. Any help ?

I have the same pain in my left shin. I keep thinking it is vein related but can't see anything. It is painful for a few seconds and then goes away. Has anyone asked a physio or doctor yet?

I ended up on this site, because I did a Google search and I have the exact same symptoms in my right leg. It's happened a handful of times in the past three days, when walking, sitting, and lying down. Haven't seen a doctor yet, but have been racking my brain trying to see if I did anything different the past three days and one thing I can think of is dehydration and a high sodium intake, and even though it largely doesn't feel like it, I'm wondering if it's not a leg cramp. I'm thinking that it possibly doesn't feel like a cramp, because it's in an unusual spot for a cramp and is always in the same spot, next to my shin bone. But it's similar in that it's a crushing pain that goes away when I'm able to move my leg around. I'm going to try drinking more water, eating some potassium-rich foods, and avoiding wine (which I had been drinking a lot of the past three days too). Anyway, just a theory, I'll see how it goes, but wanted to share in case it might be helpful for someone else.

I forgot all about this post and my pain. It stopped after changing my chair, drinking more water, and exercising more. I think the seating position was the key, though, because I've fallen back into bad habits from time to time about not enough water or exercise and pain still has not returned. I do think mine was a cramp, but in a really odd area for a cramp and in a small, local area of the leg. My old chair was for a standing height desk and I switched to a regular desk and chair.

Reading the above comments has been interesting. I too have a nerve twinging pain in my left shin. It comes and goes and does only last a few seconds but when it does happen, my leg can give way momentarily. I have not been to the doctor as it seems trivial, however, I guess if I am looking it up here on the internet it must be bothering me more than I have cared to admit to myself. Would be interested to hear if anyone has had any positive advice as yet or if the physio has worked.

I am a mother of two and 3 months pregnant. I have digenerative disc disease and from mri have a bulging disc that is touching my sciatic nerve. I have done pt, chiropractic care, tyleonl 3 and muscle relaxers. I am having no relief. The dr's don't seem to believe how much pain I am in. I can handle my back pain as I have dealt with that since I was 18 but the pain in my right leg from my shin to my ankle is unbearable. I am becoming severely depressed from not being able to do anything or feel that I am taking care of my children like i should be. Can anyone provide any suggestions? I am desperatly looking for answers.

my pain in my shin was killing me .they figured out i had a real issue from my mri and put me on gabbapentin, and it has worked for me.the nerve pain is gone and i was told a bone fragment can end up being reintegrated naturally back into the broken vertebrae.

I too have been suffering from constant gnawing pain to the front of my shin.I got the results back from an MRI today and was told I have a large disk fragment at L4 level and have previously known about disk bulges and annular tears in several of my L vertebrae.Hope this may shed some light for some of you out there.

Hi all
Its been a while since I was last on. Thank you all for your replies.
Dare I say it but the Shin pain has stopped! I have started swimming more and this has also eased the pain in my knees so if you suffer from Osteoarthritis I would definitely recommend this gentle exercise!

I have this same pain and have not told the dr yet.. it is hurting so bad this week WHAT is it? It is to the right of the shin and hurts like someone is sticking a sharp knife in it just all of a sudden and then stops for a few mins. then comes back. It is not in the bone. I am 62 and disable with back probles and muscles. I have not been doing any big time exersize. Walking but not anything that would cause this. I have had it a little for a couple of years but not like this bad. It has not stopped in days!! Is it a nerve?
