Sharp burning pain in my nipple/ now breast

I awoke this morning with sharp burning pain in my nipple and it has continued all day long. It isn't like the swelling or heaviness or ache of menstrual pain. Nor is it like the pains in the breast that I've experienced before and been told was due to caffiene. I don't consume very much caffiene and am only about 20 pounds overweight. My breast looks the same, I just keep getting this jabbing pain right in the tip of the nipple. If I hold my breast in my hand, it seems to ease up if not stop. If I let go or bend over, it is really bad again. I am 48 years old and had my only child at age 40. Most importantly, I can't afford and do not have health insurance so no doctor will see me. I'm kind of scared but trying not to be. I don't feel a lump or anything and no discoloration.

Actually, I wrote all of this yesterday and now today I am experiencing the pains in the left side of my breast instead of my nipple. Maybe it is just caffiene related. I hope so. Any info would be appreciated.

Hello Sharona and all!
I am Nani. I feel some kind of burning pain in both of my nipples, when I touch them, and it is my 2nd day. Don't think it is PMS and never had such kind of symptom. I am 36 yrs old and have a benign node in my right breast, which I follow up with mammogram every 6 months and they did biopsy 7 months ago, and the results were negative for cancer. I am not pregnant and don't have children.
Any idea ?
Thank you!

Hi Nani,
Burning pain in your nipples could be a sign of infection, and it is important to call your doctor for a check-up.

Can you let us know when you call the doctor?

It seems funny that I started to experience the same thing. burning in the nipple, and when I do apply some preasure it seems to let up a bit. I do consume WAY to much coffee, so I've been playing it off as that. BUT, I know better then to play anything like this off. Like you, I have crappy health Insureance and my last Mammogram cost me $1,500 out of pocket. I thought about calling Nurse direct to find out if I should repeat the exam due to the burning and shooting pain in my nipple. I have asked myself over and over the past 2 days, and this is SICK, Can I afford it? Yeah, lest reform out healthcare. Anyway, if you would find out any more please let me know and I will do the same. Thanks for your post, and I wish you the best of luck. P.S. Don't let the money stop you from doing what you know is right. Go and seek help no matter what! Thoughts and prayers.

Hi anon,
I'm curious if you have decided to take your own excellent advice and "don't let the money stop you from doing what you know is right", and have the pain checked out? At least, call your doctor's office to speak with a nurse about this condition?

I am concerned when you describe this as "shooting pain".

Can you let us know how you are doing?

I'm 26 and I've been having a burning pain in my right nipple off and on for the past 2 months. Is this something I should be worried about? I live in the California Bay Area.

Hey, Anon,

It's definitely something to be aware of and to ask your health care provider about the next time you see her or him. Do you do breast self-exams, and have you felt any sort of lump? Is there any warmth or "feverish" feeling in the area? Any change in coloration or texture of the skin?

It is probably perfectly normal. But since it's only been something you've noticed in the past couple of months, I would ask about it. Do you have an annual exam or any other doctor's appointment coming up soon? If so, be sure to ask about this. If not, you might call your doctor's office and just ask to speak to the nurse practitioner on duty. Tell her or him your symptoms and ask if it's something to just keep an eye on or whether the doctor should see you.

Will you do that for us?

Hi Anonymous,

I am not sure if you are the same person that wrote in but are you experiencing any nipple discharge? Discoloration? Does it hurt only sometimes? All the time?
