Swollen and puffy eyelids in the morning and then get flaky, red and sore during the day...

Hi there...

Was just wondering... the last 6-8 weeks, i've been waking up with swollen puffy eyelids - which i first thought was seasonal allergies, but it hasn't stopped. As the day goes on, my eyelids skin will get flaky like exzema, flakes off or just looks horrible... sometimes they're sore, red in areas, very dry and sometimes itchy...

Has anyone experienced this? I've never had any problems with skin problems ever nor many allergies ever either... once in a while in the spring...

I've tried many different kinds of natural creams with no relief! What could be causing this? I'm stumped... when i first went to my doctor, she just sent me home with allergy pills and drops that have done nothing but cost me lots of money....

I'd appreciate any help... with much appreciation...
sincerely, carol :o)

I have had the same symptoms for about 9 years and have never posted a comment in my life but I hope I can help some of you! for me it was my laundry detergent. I am back to normal finally. I was using the Free & Clear version of Tide but found out even that can have a preservative that causes allergies. I also avoid anything that has a scent on my face and use Aveno.

I am so thankful for all this info. My poor mom is experiencing puffy red eyes that look like a raccoon- it is painful and looks awful. This happened to her a couple months ago too. After reading the comments we think we have determined a common thing that happened - she was away both times and we believe the sheets were washed in tide. This seems to be the common denominator. I would be so thankful if this is the answer as she has been to the Dr and they really thought it was an allergy-but they did not know what it was to. Will give an update after tomorrow.

Wow! This seems to be happening to a lot of people,
I'm also suffering from dry itchy swollen eyelid,
If it was anywhere else on my body I probably wouldn't
Be so depressed over it, I'm a nail tech and I'm so afraid
That it might be the dust from the nails, iv tried stuff, but
Nothing worked, I really wish there was a home remedy to help me.

I had the same issue for over a year. After multiple dermatologist opinions, changes to my diet, antibiotics, and creams galore, nothing was working. Allergy pills did not help. Changing cosmetics/shampoo/face products didn't help either. I even had my house tested for mold. I was so frustrated - my eyes were so swollen, flakey, and irritated.

It turns out that my Tide laundry detergent was the culprit! My eyes would always be awful after sleeping because of the proximity to a Tide-washed pillowcase. After switching to a natural detergent, my eyes are finally back to normal. If the eye itself is fine and only the lid/skin around it is puffy/tight/flaky, you could be having the same problem. If it's not pink eye and not blepharatis, then look around in your environment and try to find correlations between the flare-ups and some sort of chemical. Whether it's nail polish, laundry detergent, makeup, face wash, perfume, fabric softener - whatever! I recently wore a shirt that had been washed with Tide and my eyes flared up again - I changed the shirt and they were back to normal in a few hours. I know how frustrating this problem can be - don't give up! Best of luck.

I am so thankful for your comment! My mother has been having this issue and both time it happened we believe that Tide was used on the sheets and even her clothes this time-and today is the worst day. This has been soooo helpful and we now have something to try- hopefully this is it.

I have the same thing and figured out what was causing it for me - nailpolish!!! If you have these symptoms, go take your nail polish off and see if your eyes return to normal in a few days; the itchiness will go away soon after. The toxic chemicals in nail polish are introduced to your eyes when you touch them, wash your face, etc. You don't realize the allergy because the skin on your hands is much tougher, but the sensitive skin on your eyelids react almost immediately! It doesn't seem to be all nailpolishes, but I urge you to start keeping track of which polishes and treatments lead to your reaction.

Good luck - Sarah

Have you found a nail polish brand that does not cause this reaction?

This sounds like your basic blepharitis. Look it up. There are basically two kinds. It's treatable but you really need to book an appt w/an opthlamalogist. Keep your eye really clean and clear away any debris. Going on fish oil can help, too, plus picking up some Candela at your drugstore even thought this would be an off label.

I suffer for allergic blepharitis sometimes so I have experience in dealing with it.
