My boyfriend of 6 months has anxiety. I am not originally from the State I live in now and I am trying to get him to spend a weekend in my hometown but his anxiety gets so bad even thinking about it, he doesn't end up going.

Does anyone have any suggestions? He will not take prescriptions medication so I am trying to find a natural solution.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Dealing with pretty extreme anxiety I know what helps most is coping skills. Just learning what calms you down can prevent future attacks because you'll be able to pull yourself out of the attack before it gets to a point when you can't get out.

Your boyfriend is smart not to start with medication at all. Even a few weeks on an anti-depressant (most commonly used for anxiety/panic attacks) can be addicting. I was on 10mg (very small!) of Paxil everyday for 2 1/2 years, I gained 30lbs in just one year, was numb to any emotions, drank more than usual (it took longer to feel that "buzzed" feeling), and you're basically covering up the reasons for anxiety/panic attacks.

I've been off for 2 months (my husband and I decided back in December we would start trying to get pregnant and you take meds when preggo!), and have already lost 15 lbs without changing anything, started seeing a therapist that treats anxiety disorders, and picked up a great book that might help: The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook by Dr. Edmund J. Bourne. I think that would be a good starting point along with the Therapy. The books talks about causes, non-medicinal treatment and coping strategies. In the 3 weeks I've been reading it, I've been able to stave off the start of panic multiple times and it's made life a little easier to deal with so far.

Treatment and getting over everything is not over night and takes some work, but can be done! I also suggest him getting full blood work done to rule out any other ailment that could be contributing. My friend suffered from anxiety as well and found out through a blood panel that she has a gluten sensitivity and after eliminating gluten from her diet, she has seen many of her symptoms/attacks diminish.

Again, I think it's great he doesn't want to go down the medication road. Dr.'s are so quick to prescribe pills these days, but this can be treated with some dedication and will-power!

good Luck :)

Some GOOD NEWS for you and your boyfriend. At some point in time his "anxiety attacks" (PANIC ATTACKS) can be controlled. I strongly suggest he "bite the bullet" and seek a "qualified" and experienced medical professional. I suggest a phychiatrist first and foremost. A phychiatrist who is known for having a good success rate for panic disorder. One who is willing to deal with a patient "one on one" rather than send the patient to a phycologist or group therapy sessions. I think it's important to seek out a "good" phychiatrist because he/she is also an MD who can eliminate actual physical conditions as possible causes. Anxiety is a very complex problem with a multitude of degrees and variables.
What works for one may do nothing for another. A phychiatrist can order medications that will positively put a patient back in enough control that they can "learn" how their panic is triggered, what goes on in their mind and body that produces the horrific symptoms they experience and allow themselves to function, while retraining their brains so they no longer FEAR panic attacks. You can stop the FEAR. It's perfectly normal and natural to feel panic if you car is stuck on the tracks and a train is coming. It's NOT NORMAL if you're enjoying TV and suddenly, out of nowhere you are thrown into a full blown panic attack. That's the kind of anxiety attack I'm addressing. That and the fear of going somewhere for fear you'll be away from your hospital emergency room or even your own safe bedroom or home. Seek out the very best medical professional you can find, get medicated so you can start your journey back to living without fear.

Well maybe you should try to find out what causes your boyfriends anxeity attacks, a panic disorder can have many causes, I think that if you are able to get to the root of the problem you might be able to fix it, and not jus treat the symptoms with the use of medication.

Note: On Cnet.com, users report that the "Panic Away" system (which is what the squidoo link above takes you to) costs about $70. There are two reviews:

That link is not good anymore. I downloaded it and it installed and when opened, said the link had been deleted.

Panic attacks may be symptoms of an anxiety disorder. These attacks are a serious health problem in the U.S. At least 1.7% of adult Americans, or about 3 million people, will have panic attacks at some time in their lives, with the peak age at which people have their first panic attack (onset) being 15 to 19 years. Another fact about panic is that this symptom is strikingly different from other types of anxiety; panic attacks are so very sudden and often unexpected, appear to be unprovoked, and are often disabling.
