I have a hiatal hernia, and often have pain on my left side below my ribs. Noticed after physical activity like moving boxes or something my urine is very dark and bloodlike. No pain while urinating. Just scary. When I pee again later it looks normal again. What could be the reason for this?

Hello Anon
Thank you for writing.
Most people with hiatal hernias have no symptoms.
Symptoms may occur when stomach acid moves up into the esophagus. This is known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and can cause:
Heartburn, especially after eating or lying down
Pain or discomfort in the stomach, chest, or esophagus (swallowing tube)
Belching
Hoarseness
Throat irritation (frequent clearing of the throat)
Chest pain
Difficulty swallowing
Bleeding from the stomach or esophagus
Anon, when exerting yourself like this, you may have bleeding in your digestive tract that is then seen in your urine. Please talk to your doctor to examine this possibility and in the meantime, do as little strenuous activity as possible.

Thank You! I don’t have acid reflux but I noticed ever since I got the hiatal hernia from my accident I can’t seem to belch anymore. If I drink beer
November 27, 2017 - 5:05pmOr any carbonated drinks or if I eat foods that cause gas like popcorn, cabbage or other foods I get a lot of pain. Sometimes if I lie down a certain way like on my side I might belch but mostly I can’t so I avoid these foods. I had surgery once for my hernia and they said my diaphragm wasn’t able to be repaired. Not sure what to do or who really to see.
