Q:

vaginal tearing

Hello! Every time I have sex with my boyfriend, my vagina gets cuts around the opening. These cuts are painful, and sometimes pretty deep. We always use a lot of lubricant and spend a lot of time in foreplay. I'm in my 20's and I take birth control pills, could those be causing the issue? Thanks!

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER and thank you for reaching out to us with your concern.
Have you spoken to your gynecologist about this/

I doubt that oral contraceptives are to blame. The most common cause of vaginal tearing during intercourse is lack of lubrication. But, not in your case.

Some sexual positions tend to cause more vaginal tears and abrasions than others, and use of sex toys can also be a factor. Sex toys are sometimes made of materials that are irritating to the skin, or they might have sharp or rough edges. With the woman on top, there’s less risk for vaginal cuts because she has more control.

Regards,
Maryann
