I have been extremely stressed out this past few months. First off I am 36 years old and have not had any children. I started having bleeding between periods over the past year which has gradually gotten worse. I figured it was stress. I also have had frequent bouts of constipation. Last month I strained really hard and the day after I started having a weird feeling in my vagina. It feels like I have torn a muscle down there. Sometimes my symptoms are itchy and swollen feeling around my vagina. Other times I feel like I have discharge stuck in there that won't come out or it feels like I am going to leak all the time. Just today I started having very dark almost black discharge. I have been on metoprolol for my heart for a year now and I just started taking a probiotic to help with constipation about a week ago. I have a huge fear of going to the gynocologist but know that I really need to go. I have a huge fear I have something seriously wrong. I keep looking up what it could be. My husband is very frustrated with me.

Hello and thank you for sharing your question.

Bleeding between periods is the first sign you need to see your gynaecologist.  It could simply be hormonal imbalances, but judging from your other symptoms you may have some other issues going on too.

The swelling and itchiness is a sign of vulvovaginitis which is caused by:

  • yeast, bacteris, viruses, and parasites
  • bubble bath, soaps, feminine sprays, perfumes
  • vaginal birth control
  • early on-set menopause
  • lack of cleanliness

I understand you have a fear of gynaecologists.  But as this point I think you should be more concerned about your health than the treatment.  I encourage you to see one right away.
