Hello John,
Mental illnesses run the gamut from anxiety to bipolar disorder. Some conditions have a strong genetic link, such as depression and schizophrenia. Mental illnesses can be a result of environmental, biological and behavioral factors.
Researchers work tirelessly to determine the causes. So much is still unknown.
