What effect do ovarian cysts have on the menstrual cycle?

I had been experiencing right sided pelvic pain for almost two weeks before I decided to get it checked out. An ultrasound was performed and it turned out to be a hemorrhagic corpus luteum cyst on my right ovary. My GYN said not to worry about it, that it would go away on its own and left it at that - no follow-up needed. My following period was a few days late and a lot lighter than usual. Towards the end of it I started to have the pain again - not too bad, just annoying. Could this change in my cycle possibly be from the cyst?

Anon - It's not likely that the cyst is affecting your cycle, but the stress of dealing with this situation could be having an impact. Please read the following for more information on ovarian cysts:

If you continue to experience pain, or have additional symptoms, it would be best to see your doctor again. Good luck, and we hope the pain diminishes soon. Pat
