Last night I woke up after a couple hours of sleep and for a few seconds I could not remember anything! As with most people, I have awaken at night wondering if it were a weekday or weekend and feeling relieved to know it was the weekend....:) However, I have never experienced what I experienced last night. I did not even know who was sleeping in the other bedroom. I was totally blank. My heart was racing. After a few seconds, my memory slowly began to return. I repeated over and over my name, who was sleeping in the next room, song lyrics, information about my family. I was afraid to go back to sleep for fear that it would happen again and last longer or permanently. Please help....

Hello Anonymous,

This is not normal and should be evaluated by your physician. It can be especially serious, depending on your age and medical history.
Please contact your physician today.

Maryann

I believe these episodes are more common than previously thought and are within the realm of "normal" sleep patterns. Although not experienced by the majority of people, it does happen. Many who experience these episodes have no cause for alarm, but for all practical reasons should be followed up by a sleep specialist, neurologist for further evaluation to rule out any possibility of a more serious underlying cause.

It also happened to me. It's like a dream. A really dark dream where I couldn't see anything and I felt like I'm the only star in universe but I felt safe and contented. Then suddenly i felt something strange like I forgot something that I shouldn't. In a few seconds, I woke up with two guys beside me- a younger and older one. They are asking me question's that i could not answer. I didn't know where am I or what am I, what are these figures called. Then little later, I remember the younger guy beside me, he's my boyfriend and the older guy's my dad. When my sister came in, that's when i remembered everything but just slowly sinking in. I was rushed to the hospital because a very high fever. I don't know if that was a NDE or some medical conditions but I will never forget the experience, the feeling of being lost but feeling safe at the same time.

I have this. On waking sometimes I can't recall my wife's first name for a few seconds. It's as if my body wakes faster then my brain..(as if I have memory lag..)

That's exactly what it is. Your left brain and your right brain work differently. Some parts of your brain don't activate as soon as your body wakes up. Nothing to worry about. It would be different if it had happened while you were awake.

OK here it goes..
Since the age of 17 I have had memory lapses. Like going to school and getting off the bus, and not knowing where I am, what I'm doing or where I want to go. I am 42 now. I'm not a drinker, smoker or druggy. These occur more frequently now. they only last for a short time but it can happen while driving down a well known street...
also I've noticed my spelling is getting shocking... sometimes I cant remember how to spell simple words. I'm not at all stressed when it occurs. i used to have migraines now i just get sinus. What could it be.... Is it some sort of dementia?

Was shopping in the store today - a store I go to at least 3 times a week and have for the past 10 years, I turned around and suddenly couldn't remember where I was, what state I was in (we have moved many times for work) or what i was doing. My husband was there and I knew him but couldn't figure out anything else. It was so scary. I did get a flu shot yesterday and got sick last night from it - wondering if it could have effected my memory? I am healthy, just went for a physical, for my age of 62 I am fine for my weight and I only have a slight problem with high blood pressure which I am medicated for. Any ideas would be helpful.

The same situation also happened to me, i woke up one day and couldn't remember anything, i looked around trying to regain my memory, i know my name but i can't remember the date, the place where i am, the things i should do, my degree program, and even my boyfriend then i saw my phone and checked it, i relaxed for a while until my memory slowly returned. that incident last for how many minutes. and it was very hard to explain... i was worried because people might not believe me if i tell them what happened, I'm new to this and i've never heard about this kind of situation. i was afraid to consult the doctor because that feeling of short term memory loss is very hard to explain, im afraid he might think i'm crazy...

This has also happened to me once before. One night I was sleeping when I awoke I noticed a little boy lying in between me and my husband. I nudge him gently to awake him, then softly asked.. Who are you sweetie? He replies I'm your son. It scared the holy shxx out of me to the point I was in tears.
