Dr. Kahlon explains the differences between coronary artery disease and cardiovascular disease. He completed his Fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine and Internal Medicine Residency at the St. John Hospital and Medical Center and now works at Banner Heart Hospital in Mesa, Arizona.
Dr. Kahlon:
Often patients, when they visit with me in the clinic they have this question about coronary disease and cardiovascular disease and, how do you differentiate between these two? Coronary disease is a very specific disease that just means that you have blockages, or what is called atherosclerotic stenosis, inside the arteries which supply your heart. So these are coronaries, which are fuel lines for your heart which are getting some sort of blockage in them, and that’s what is described as coronary disease.
But the word cardiovascular disease is very broad and it means any disease related to your heart or vascular system which could include valvular heart disease that means the valves inside your heart may not be working properly.
You may have cardiomyopathy which means that the muscle of the heart may not be working properly, or you may have arrhythmic disorders, which means the rhythm, the electrical system of your heart may be not functioning at optimal rate or may be functioning too fast or too slow, or you may have diseases involving the aorta which is the big artery which leaves the heart and supplies rest of your body.
So any of those diseases which affect aorta or your heart are kind of classified in a big umbrella of cardiovascular disease and coronary artery disease is a small part of that, though very important but small part of that.

I have Coronary Heart Disease. I am 53 and had a heart attack 12/ 14/ 10. I have no family history, no high numbers and I do not smoke. Anyone is at risk! Any questions - message me!
