About 14 million American women suffer with vulvar discomfort. And we’re talking vulvar discomfort, not vaginal discomfort. Vulvar discomfort may have many causes – one of which is infection. Vulvar conditions can cause symptoms ranging from itching and burning to life-changing pain that often goes misdiagnosed and maybe untreated.
Some of the most common vulvar disorders include :
Vulvodynia(VVS), Vulvar dystrophy, Lichen schlerosus and Lichen planus.
In addition to medical conditions, vulvar skin is sensitive to any hormonal changes. Decreases in hormone levels may cause the vulva skin to thicken or loose elasticity and become less resistant to mechanical and bacteriological stress.
It’s no surprise then that menopausal women and breast cancer survivors who may be taking strong hormone inhibitors are prone to vulvar discomfort.
And there are some reports that certain oral contraceptives can trigger vulvar discomfort. A new, hormone-free, “Vulva Skin Care” regimen can prevent vulvar discomfort by soothing the skin and helping to restore skin barrier properties.
