Dr. Andrew Atiemo discusses venous thromboembolism (VTE) and the associated symptoms. Dr. Atiemo is a highly-qualified cardiologist at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona.

Dr. Atiemo:
Venous thromboembolism is an umbrella term that is used to refer to the conditions of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Deep venous thrombosis is a condition in which clots form within the deep veins of the legs. These veins can then break off and then travel into the lungs. That’s then called a pulmonary embolism, when you have a clot that travels into the lungs. This is a very, very common condition, which can also be severe or even life threatening.

So the symptoms arising from venous thromboembolism could include pain and swelling in the legs, that’s what one might experience with a DVT or deep vein thrombosis. With pulmonary embolism the symptoms would include possibly chest pain, shortness of breath and in its severest form again, patients can present with very low blood pressure and it can also be fatal.
