There are a number of different types of tests that are available to evaluate the heart, and perhaps the most common is the treadmill stress test. Basically that involves walking on the treadmill while the heart is monitored and this can allow one to diagnose coronary artery disease.
Sometimes we couple with the treadmill exercise a form of imaging such as echocardiography or nuclear imaging. That’s referred to as a nuclear stress test. For patients who are unable to exercise there can be other options such as a chemical stress test, and various medications such as dobutamine, which stimulates the heart, can be used to again cause a chemical stress on the heart in this situation.
