Dr. Lyle:
There are many different types of cholesterol. A lot of people know that there’s a good type and a bad type. What they are referring to is what we call the bad cholesterol is the LDL cholesterol. LDL stands for low density lipoprotein. It is this type of cholesterol that ends up in the walls of our arteries that is responsible for the beginnings of atherosclerosis, which is coronary disease, which is what the process of narrowing an artery that leads to chest pain and heart attacks.

Good cholesterol, on the other hand, is something, which we call the HDL or high density lipoprotein. What that does is it helps remove cholesterol from the body and helps lower your LDL level and it’s these numbers that we consider to be the cornerstone of therapy for treating cholesterol problems and heart disease.
