Dr. Schmidt shares if a woman should seek fertility counseling when she is battling cancer.
Dr. Schmidt:
Often times when people get the diagnosis of cancer that’s all they focus on and they forget that cancer is not necessarily a diagnosis of death. They do have a future and failing to think about how to preserve or maximize their future of fertility potential can be devastating for them. So it is a good idea, again, depending on what kind of cancer and what kind of therapy they are anticipating on performing.
She should seek a reproductive endocrinologist - that is somebody who is a subspecialist in infertility. There are only a few in San Diego. There are only a few in every region of the United States because it’s a very highly specialized field that takes quite a number of years of training.
