Dr. Emdur shares if hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a beneficial choice for all women.

Dr. Emdur:
Well, hormone therapy is a complicated question. Everybody is different and it really depends where you are in your life cycle. What we do know is that after age 30 all our hormones are decreasing except cortisol and if you are a woman, as your estrogen levels drop you go into perimenopause and menopause. Estrogen does a lot of things in the body. In fact, it does 400 different biological properties that it’s involved with.

So if your estrogen levels are low, you know, you are not going to be able to think clearly. You are more prone to fractures. Your skin is going to wrinkle. Your energy level is going to go down. Your metabolism is going to go down. So, if you are having those symptoms, probably you will need some hormone replacement therapy.
