The Real Joys of Sex

Birds do it and bees do it, but sex is a pleasure that can be beneficial for our health as well. Having pleasurable sex can do a lot of things from us but I thought I'd point out some of the big perks (besides the obvious one!):

1. It can help your heart - Having sex regularly has been shown to decrease the risks of heart attacks or strokes. You're burning some calories after all, and getting your heart pumping, and that definitely does the body good. Simple physical intimacy such as holding hands has been shown to increase happiness which correlates with better health and well-being - think how good full body on body action can help your ticker!

2. Don't stress - Having sex that is concentual and safe can be rewarding and wonderful for the body. But it can also help you relax. Stress and pain levels decrease when oxytocin and other feel-good endorphins are released. In simple terms, that means, that when you have satisfying sex, your body is going to be more relaxed, you may be able to handle stress better and you may experience less pain from PMS symptoms, or headaches, even arthritis.

3. Sleep well! - Any kind of great workout can help you burn calories and help you later on at night, but sex, as I've mentioned above can help relieve stress and leads to a better night of rest.

Obviously these are by no means guaranteed results and you shouldn't expect to use sex as some kind of miracle drug that alleviates all symptoms. But it is important to remember that there are an array of benefits to enjoying safe and consentual intercourse. I emphasize safe and consentual because you won't be able to alleviate stress if you find yourself with an STD the next morning, or a particularly killer hangover, or even an unintended pregnancy. Incorporating sex into a healthy and balanced life requires that we take care of other aspects of our lives: our bodies through healthy eating and diet, our personal selves through meditation, therapy, or just spending time with loved ones, etc.

What does sex help you do better? How does it help you feel like your best self?
