Dr. Garrett Lam describes intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and how hypertension affects pregnancy. Dr. Lam is a practicing obstetrician and gynecologist at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona.
Dr. Lamb:
Well intrauterine growth restriction is simply a term for a baby that is not growing to its potential and it’s usually because of some underlying pathologic or some underlying cause that’s preventing that baby from reaching its full potential.
Amongst these things could be the placenta not working well, the baby may be affected by some sort of maternal disease such as an infection or a viral infection; it may have an underlying genetic disorder or even something that could affect the transmission of oxygen and nutrition to the baby such as through chronic hypertensive disease that therefore affects the baby’s ability to grow normally.
Hypertension within pregnancy, the word is potential and with hypertensive disease there’s a potential for affecting fetal growth; there’s a potential for affecting amniotic fluid volume; there’s a potential for a mother to develop preeclampsia and have the resulting issues from hypertensive disease which can range from anything as mild to high blood pressures to having strokes or heart attacks in pregnancy itself.
So the key is, once a woman realizes that she has hypertensive disease within pregnancy that she’d be followed carefully with the help of her doctor to recognize early any signs of developing preeclampsia or worsening medical problems with any of her organ systems.
