Dr. Pohl explains why recovering addicts should alter who they socialize with.
The expression that we use about recovery is that you change people, places, and things. Those are the things on the outside of me that stimulate me to want to use my drugs. So if you are hanging out with people who are drinking, it makes it harder to stay off the alcohol. If you are hanging out in a bar drinking soda and you are looking at somebody and getting a remembrance of that feeling, it’s not a great place for somebody who is early in recovery.
Things, stressors, aggravations, probably something that you want to avoid or moderate as well as you can until you develop skills to deal with those things as they come up.
