Dena Shares Her Inspiration To Advocate For Women's Health (VIDEO)

Dena describes how her "health-awakening experience" drove her to advocate for women's health.

Dena:
What totally, totally inspires me is like that woman I talked about. When I go in and she is sick and she is miserable and she can’t walk and she can’t eat and she is given up, totally given up in every way–spiritually, emotionally, physically, and she is tired, and I can come in and inspire somebody like that.

There’s no greater feeling. There’s no greater purpose in life than being of service to other women, and I just had a woman recently with fibromyalgia. Ten years she suffered–ten years. She came to me, I said, “Are you sick and tired and sick and tired enough?” She said, “Absolutely.”

I cleaned out her pantry, cleaned out her refrigerator, took her to Whole Foods, cooked with her for two days. Just cooking with her she was crying, because she said, “I had become so out of touch with myself that I actually hate food.”

She is loving food. She called me one day and said, she was crying, and she said, “I feel like I have been reborn.” She was in the dressing room, she goes, “I love my body,” because secondarily, she is done with the fibromyalgia because we took off all inflammatory-causing food. But secondarily, she has lost 15 pounds and loves herself and feels great, and at the beginning it was so hard for her to even say, “I feel great!”

And one of the things I teach women is to really shout it out and say, “I feel great,” because we are so used to saying, “Well, I don’t feel so good,” and complaining and ”I don’t really feel great, and I have headaches, and I have all these issues.” It was really hard for her to come out of that. So when I see that I can help somebody to turn themselves inside out and become somebody new, that they feel great and empower them, it empowers me.

It empowers me and it inspires me. And I am full of awe and I am so humble that--I really could start to cry, because I am so humbled that I am able to, that I have been given the gift. And I think the gift definitely, and this is where I turn crisis into opportunity. My gift definitely came from turning myself inside out through my cancer, my health-awakening experience.

And I never say I was sick. I had a health-awakening experience, and I am able to give that health-awakening experience and share it with others.
