Q:

Am I at risk of pregnancy

Hi there,

I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend about a month ago and he finished inside of me. The night prior (say Wednesday) to this I had forgotten to take my pill and didn't realise. I took my pill as normal on Thursday without realising i'd missed a dose, woke up Friday morning and saw it sitting in my pill packet and took it straight away. I then followed the advice of my pill booklet and continued taking pills as normally at my normal time throughout my placebo week and into the next month (No break).I hadn't missed a dose in the 7 days (or month) prior to this mishap and have not missed a dose since. I am starting to worry whether I am pregnant or not as i've been very achy and have started to experience cramps, I just can't seem to get it off my mind. I take Yasmin 28-day combination pills.

I missed the 3rd last pill in my pack, experienced some bleeding that was not as present as usual, then continued to have this 'breakthrough' bleeding for the remainder of the month up until about 2 days ago. Now I am currently just waiting to see if my next period comes as i'm on the 2nd placebo tablet for the second pack.

Hi Maryann, I should have mentioned that I forgot this pill 3-4 days before my period was due. I did get bleeding but it wasn't as intense as my normal period and then had breakthrough bleeding for almost the remainder of the month. I'm currently having no bleeding at the moment and i'm on my 3rd placebo tablet for the next pack

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Thank you for reaching out to our community with your concern of a pregnancy risk.

To best answer your question, I need to ask you a question.

Did you have bleeding during the week you took the white reminder pills? If so, then you did not become pregnant.

The correct way to take the pill is to take one pill every day at the same time in the order directed on the package. Preferably, take the pill after the evening meal or at bedtime, with some liquid, as needed. Yasmin can be taken without regard to meals.

Yasmin packs contain 21 yellow pills (with hormones) and seven white "reminder" pills. The reminder pills give you a break from the hormone pills and keep you on your regular cycle. Your period will usually begin while you are using the white reminder pills.

Regards,
Maryann

Hi Maryann,

The pill I didn't take was 3 days before my placebo week. My period usually comes 3-4 days into the placebo week. I did experience what I thought was my period except lighter, then breakthrough bleeding until approximately 2 days ago. Nothing is there at the moment and i'm on the second day of my placebo week in the next pack. No period yet but I am just wondering whether the way in which I missed my pill and later made up for it will have any significant chance on increasing the risk of pregnancy?

Hello han19992,

Missing a pill and having unprotected intercourse does increase the risk of becoming pregnant. However, you had breakthrough bleeding, so you did not become pregnant.
