Brown discharge?

Hello there,

For the past 2-3 days, I've been having brown discharge on my panties as well as when I wipe after I pee. I haven't had sex since December or January but either way, we used a condom and he didn't come. I've taken two home pregnancy tests which both tested negative and I haven't missed a period. I've had a few pregnancy scares and missed periods in the past due to stress and all so I guess it's fair to say that my period is not necessarily regular, however, I've gotten my period on Jan 15 and Feb 15 and so from today, it's been about a little more than a week since my last period ended. My next period isn't expected to come until 1.5-2 weeks from now and I've also recently started to use a period calendar app to track my periods and it says that this past week has been my fertility period and yesterday was my ovulation day if that means anything for this situation.

I've never experienced this brown discharge and I don't feel any pain or anything with it but seeing it freaks me out a little bit so I'm just wondering if you have any idea on what's going on and if I should be concerned?

Thank you.

Hi Anon,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community!

Vaginal discharge is the female reproductive systems way of cleaning and preventing infection.  The fluids from the vaginal and cervix glands play a very important role in carrying away dead cells and bacteria.

The discharge can vary in color and odor and will be different depending on the time in your menstrual cycle.

There could be a number of reasons for brown vaginal discharge.  To name a few:

  • Pregnancy
  • Ovulation
  • Menopause
  • Endometrial bleeding

Are you experiencing any other symptoms?  If any other symptoms like itching or burning surface, that is cause for immediate concern because it's a sign of infection or other condition, so keep that in mind for future.

Anytime our body does something different (than the normal for us) it's cause for concern.  Below is additional information specifically regarding brown vaginal discharge.

I hope this helps.

Be well.

Hi, thanks for your quick reply!

I don't think I'm pregnant because like I mentioned, I haven't had sex in a few months, we used protection, and I tested negative on two tests in addition to not experiencing any pregnancy symptoms. My period just ended over a week and a half ago so I'm not due to have it again yet. Overall, I don't feel any itching or burning sensations nor is there really any odour. I've read that brown discharge during ovulation usually only lasts for 1-2 days however, it's been about 3 days now and I should have ovulated yesterday but I'm still experiencing it today.

With this information, do you think I should be worried??
