Brown discharge then what I think is a period

So I've been sick for about 2 weeks. Started as a cold then went to a bad cough and ear infection then now it just around. I had protected sex the day the cold started coming. We filled the condom with water after and there were no holes and nothing seemed to have been able to happen. 2 or 3 days after the cold I started to have light brown (very very light) discharge with brown mucus in it. This went on for a few days where it went darker every couple days with less of the mucus, 3 or 4 days ago I started what I'm guess is my period just one day earlier than I was suppose to. First day seemed like a normal period, second day I woke up and coughed and a lot of blood came out. Lots and lots of blood with large clots in it, for the rest of the day my period seemed to be normal, yesterday it was lighter than normal and today even lighter. I went to the doctor about the cold and he said it is just a viral infection, could that be what's messing things up down there or could it be something more.

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Thank you for reaching out to our community.

Did you tell your physician about how this period presented differently?
While being in the physician's office about the virus would have been an excellent opportunity to ask your question.

I shouldn't think a viral infection would have this affect on your period.

Regards,
Maryann
