Hi dotty,

Welcome to EmpowHER.  A core needle biopsy is used when your doctor needs more information about a breast lump. The needle biopsy will leave no external or internal scars and so it will not affect future breast imaging studies. There should not be any risk of any cells spreading. It's very important to discuss with your doctor any concerns you might have about any procedure before it's done. This will help you understand and be more prepared to know what to expect. The only risks associated with a breast biopsy include:

Bruising and swelling of the breast

Infection or bleeding at the biopsy site

Altered breast appearance, depending on how much tissue isremoved and how your breast heals

 • Additional surgery or other treatment, depending on biopsy  results

Here is a link on Breast Cancer where you can find answers from other members that have gone through this type of procedure. Hope this was helpful? Please keep us posted.

Best,

Daisy
