Q:

Could I be pregnant?

So the other day I may or may not have gotten a little bit of sperm on my finger. I washed them but not thoroughly. I only quickly rinsed them. I then dried my hands. About 10 minutes later I walked home and it was a very cold temperature and I was walking for about 3 minutes. I them arrived and went to the bathroom. I am concerned that I could've gotten left over surviving sperm on the toilet paper that I then wiped myself with. later I also had a shower and touched my vagina a lot as I was cleaning it. Could any sperm have been placed in my vagina that way? And one last question, if you get your period, and it arrives late with old blood, does it still mean youre menstruating or is your vagina just releasing what it was meant to several days ago. If that makes sense? Does it make it harder to get pregnant when menstruating? I'm very sorry for sounding so uneducated, but the truth is that I know very little about this category. Thanks in advance!

Hello Ama,

The blood, which was mixed with the semen, was from you since you were having your period.

There was no need to take Postinor 2 because you were at the end of your period and ovulation was not going to happen for days. Postinor 2 prevents pregnancy by preventing ovulation.

Changes in the menstrual cycle are a side effect of the pill.

By taking it when you did, you really upset the hormonal balance that regulates your menstrual cycle.

Ama, you should talk with your doctor. I think your next monthly period can start earlier or later than expected. Keep calculating from the date of your last normal period.

Regards,
Maryann

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Thank you for reaching out to us for answers to your questions and information on reproduction.

No sperm would have survived and posed any risk of causing pregnancy.

Dark brown vaginal discharge at the start of a period is simply old blood which was left from the last period. If you only have dark brown discharge or old blood for the entire period, that is unusual and needs to be evaluated by a physician.

Please take a few minutes to look at this slideshow," Am I Pregnant? Myths and Facts About Sex"

It's possible to get pregnant during your period ONLY if you a very short menstrual cycle, which is the time from the first day of one period to the first day of the next period, or a tendency to have long periods.

A typical menstrual cycle is about 28 days long, but some women have cycles as short as 22 days. If you have a shorter cycle, you could ovulate just a few days after your period ends. And since sperm can survive in your reproductive tract for up to six days, if you have sex during your period, it's possible that the sperm may still be hanging around when you ovulate, ready to fertilize the egg.

Never apologize for lack of knowledge. Continue to seek it.
