ask: I had a 3 day period last month and now I am 37 days into my cycle could I be pregnant?

I started my period on 4-20-09, it only lasted 3 days, which is not completely out of the norm for me, but it has been 37 days now since the first day of my period. My husband and I had sex on 4-30-09. I have taken a HPT but it came back negative and I was just wondering if I could be pregnant and I just took the HPT to soon? I have been more tired than my norm lately.

Hi, AJCLynch, and welcome. Let's see what we can figure out.

One thing you didn't mention was how long your cycles usually are? Meaning, are they usually 26, 28 days long? Shorter? Longer?

I'm going to just assume it's 26, 28 or 30 days for the sake of this equation. With your period starting on 4-20, your most fertile days would have been around the following:

cycles normally 26 days long: 4/28 to 5/8
cycles normally 28 days long: 4/30 to 5/10
cycles normally 30 days long: 5/2 to 5/12

So yes, I think it's possible you could be pregnant. You could also just be late -- we have had lots of questions lately from women who are up to two weeks late on their cycles, and not all of them are pregnant. With the weather changing, people dieting and getting more activity, and the stress of spring/summer and the end of school, a lot of women's hormones are changing right now.

If you ARE pregnant, depending on when you took your first HPT, I would think that it would show up by now. If I were you, I'd probably wait a couple more days and take another HPT to see what the results were. If it is still negative, wait a few more days -- and if no period comes, perhaps call your doctor's office and speak to a nurse about whether you should go in for a pregnancy blood test. Sometimes the HPTs don't pick up on a low level of HCG (the pregnancy hormone) in the woman's blood until later.

Are you trying for a baby? How do you feel about the fact that you might be pregnant? Please come back and update us and let us know how you're doing.

I want to say they normally run any where from 26 to 28 days, but this is really the first time that I have tried to track it. I took the HPT towards the middle or end of last week. We are basically going by if it happens it happens. We already have 2 kids, I really want just one more, but I would also like that to happen before I turn 30, which is almost 2 years from now. I would be ecstatic if I was, but yet also worried because of the economy and everything else going on right now.

Thank you for the reply

ajclynch: I don't know any family who has had an additional kid (planned or not) ever regret it... so good luck! It is easy to let worrying about finances overwhelm our thinking but we've found things always have a way of working out in that department while the joy of our kids is neverending.

Okay, going on a 41 day cycle, and am afraid to do another HPT and it come out negative.....I think I might wait till the end of next month and then maybe take another HPT, I just don't think I can take getting my hopes up then the test coming back negative again. I just don't know what to do! When I was PG with my daughter I knew cause I got dizzy and lightheaded while making Hamburgers....and with my son I was just late....I have been through this a couple of times where I thought I was and every test came back negative....I just don't think I can handle it again. I have been having headaches almost everyday now and nausea just about every day from the time I wake up to about late afternoon. Anyway just thought I would update on where I am at right now.

Hi,
I'm so sorry that you're in this awful waiting game...I've been there, too. Excited one minute, disappointed the next. Not knowing if you can have a beer this evening, or if you can get out the baby clothes from the attic.

Have you ever had a 41-day cycle before? The "normal range" is about 22-35 days; I believe anything after 35 or 38 days is considered to be out of this normal range. It wouldn't be out-of-the-question for you to call your OB/GYN office, and talk with a nurse. Ask what they would recommend you do with a period that is this late, and negative HPT results. They will be able to help and offer reassurance, possibly request you come in for an appointment.

Take care,
Alison

Well I skipped last month completely, I am giving till the 12th of this month, then taking another HPT & no matter the results I am calling the doctor. I can only hope that it comes back positive.

AJCLynch,

The 12th is a long way away, especially with the symptoms you're having. I agree with Alison, I sure would like to encourage you to call your doctor's office and perhaps go in and have a blood test performed. You're now about 44 days into this cycle, if my count is right, and that's definitely something they'll be interested in.

If you are pregnant, I know it would be great to find out the good news. If you aren't pregnant, it will be disappointing no matter what after waiting this long. Why not give them a call? They can probably see you in the next couple of days and you can know for sure.

Fingers crossed for you. Please keep us in the loop.

Weather I go to my doctor or buy another HPT, I have to wait till the 12th. My husband does not get paid till then....I really do want to find out, but yet also the disappointment is going to hit pretty hard if I am not pregnant, & it will be the same even if I go tomorrow and find out that I am not. I understand that there could be something wrong if I am not pregnant, I guess I am also hesitant about that.
