They concluded that they can do no more, and have recommended that he see a neurologist. This makes sense to me, but I still want to know what to expect regarding the possibility of complete recovery. Is it something we should be hoping for?

Hello Anon
Thank you for writing.
A medication like Gabapentin is important to control seizures but does come with some serious side effects - one of them being double vision.
Double vision can be serious when driving or engaged in cooking hot foods or other activities that could cause accidents or injuries.
Some side effects go away as your body adjusts to the medication but some do not.
Anon, you have been on this medication for 6 months - when did the double vision start? Have you reported this to your doctor?

My father experienced the same issue and his doctor took him off of the gabapentin. He has seen an ophthalmologist since then and all they did was prescribe him some new glasses. The issue persists. Are there any corrective measures that can be taken?

Hello Anon
Side effects can linger - when did your father come off the medication?
For corrective action, he will need to revisit his eye specialist.

Hello, he has been off for 6 to 8 months now. I'm sitting in the office with the ophthalmologist right now for a second visit. I'm wondering what he can expect. Seems like the only corrective options will be surgical, as the muscles behind the eye are responsible ☹

Hi Anon
6-8 months should be long enough for temporary side effects to end unless your father has some permanent damage.
November 21, 2018 - 3:49pmPlease let us know what the ophthalmologist says.
