Q:

I need to know if I am pregnant. I take birth control pills, but i recently missed two in a row. Before and after i missed the pills, had unprotected sex. Should i take a pregancy test or is it not necessary?

Soccergal,

My best guess would still be that you aren't pregnant but have just gotten your cycle a little off schedule due to the missed pills and the breakthrough bleeding. If I were you, I would call your doctor's office (you probably can just speak to the nurse), tell them what the deal is, and ask them when/if you should start your next pack of pills. I know it's Friday; can you still give them a call today?

ok. I've been "spotting" a lot lately, but its heavy. Is that just because of the way I have been missing my pills?

Spotting usually isn't described as heavy bleeding, and you may be experiencing "breakthrough bleeding" with missing pills.

If you do not have your period as normally expected (around the 20th), that is the time you can take a home pregnancy test if you choose. Home pregnancy tests are not accurate until you miss your period, but I agree with Diane that you have only a slight chance of pregnancy, since you took your missed pills as directed.

Yes, I did make them up that way. It happened mid-cycle i believe. I have my period at the end of each month, which i did in September, but now i've been bleeding this month during the very beginning.

Soccergal,

If you made up your pills that way, then you should be protected. I think that the breakthrough bleeding is probably just because your hormones got a little off balance when you missed the pills and then doubled up.

I want to be sure I have the timing right. You had your period in late September; and the days when you missed your pills and then made them up was in October? So you are still about 10-14 days away from your next expected period?

October 8, 2009 - 9:30am

Soccergal,

After you missed the two pills in a row, did you make them up by taking two pills for two days in a row?

For future reference, here's what you should do:
Monday - missed pill
Tuesday - missed pill
Wednesday -- take Mon and Tue pill
Thursday -- take Wed and Thur pill

It is always possible to get pregnant when you've missed pills and had unprotected sex. When in your cycle did this happen? (near your period, mid-cycle, or near the end of it?) Are you late for your period yet, or when do you expect it?

If I were you I would finish the rest of the pills as normal, and if you don't get a period, then you could do a pregnancy test. But you needn't do so now.
