At 48, peri-menopause or even the start of menopause could be causing this. This, as I am sure you know, is the "reverse puberty" of middle age where our periods and fertility levels begin to wind down. Irregular bleeding is common.

However, all irregular bleeding or excessive bleeding should be checked by a health care professional to rule out other causes such as cysts or fibroids.
