Is it possible that I'm pregnant even though I have had one period?

Hi. So, me and my boyfried are in a long distance relationship and he visited me 2 months ago, and we had sexual intercourse. We used condoms (I don't take the pill) and we always made sure at the end that it wasn't broken. He flew back home. I had my period after that, but now two months after he's gone, my period is late (15 days!) Is it possible that I'm pregnant even though I already had one period? We're freaking out, help us please. Thanks

One more piece of information: at the 10th day mark I had some drops of blood show up, and I thought my period had arrived. Thought wrong. Why did this happen?

Hello MateusG984,

Did you have spotting on the 10th day that your period was late?
It might mean that your period will start soon. My knowledge is limited. I suggest you schedule an appointment with a gynecologist who is more knowledgeable and can better answer any further questions.

Thank you so so much for your comment!

So having a period after a sexual intercourse guarantees me that I'm not pregnant?

Hi MateusG984,

Yes. About once a month, the uterus grows a new, thickened lining that can hold a fertilized egg. When there is no fertilized egg to start a pregnancy, the uterus then sheds its lining. This is the monthly menstrual bleeding or your period.

Hello MateusG984,

Welcome to the EmpowHER community. I am glad that you reached out to us with your concern.

Having a period after protected sexual intercourse tow months ago confirms that you are not pregnant. Without having unprotected intercourse since your last period, pregnancy is just not possible.

Your period could be delayed for a number of reasons. Stress is one. During periods of high stress, the body produces increased amounts of cortisol. As a result, many non-essential functions can shut down. The menstrual cycle is one.

Being ill with the flu, excessive exercising, significant weight gain or weight loss and traveling, particularly through time zones, can cause a delay.
